Just as a note, I originally wrote this article using an early beta of Flex 2. Due to syntax changes in ActionScript 3, the examples no longer compiled or ran in the final version of Flex 2. I've now updated the examples and article text with the correct (final) information.

Hi Wael,

Unfortunately, I wrote the examples in this article using one of the early betas of Flex 2, when multiple classes could be defined in a single package in a single .as file, with the restriction that only one of the classes could be public.

Since then, the rule has been changed, and as you've noted, the Flex 2 compiler now only allows one class in the
package
block in a .as file, and no class can be declared private or protected. However, as you've noted, you can still define other classes in a .as file, outside of the package, which has the same net result as the "private" classes in these examples -- those classes are accessible to classes defined in the same .as file, but not to any other class.

Interestingly, it appears that the "one class per package block" restriction is a Flex compiler restriction rather than an ActionScript restriction -- see this article ("Multiple AS3 Classes in One File") for more details on how to do that. However, all the classes defined in the
package
block must still be public or internal.

Hello, nice article

I just spent like an hour on Flex Builder trying to get this example compiling with no luck

"speaking pets in ActionScript 3"

I just wanted to paste that class and get it working that's all. All I am trying to do is to have multiple classes within one file under one package.

The "speaking pets in ActionScript 3"

produces an error
: The private attribute may be used only on class property definitions

I was able to get multiple classes working but if only one class stayes inside the package and the rest are outside.

please let me know, if this can be done

I would really appreciate a clear example

Thank you

Kind Regards,

Wael

I grabbed ASUnit and installed it: unfortunately, it doesn't recognize that Flash 8 > Flash 7.2 and insists I 'upgrade'.

Any notion on when ASUnit.org will have this taken care of? Would really like to begin trying some unit tests, but must use Flash 8.

Thanks! (Great article, by the way!)

Hi Serge,

In AS2 there was something called
__resolve
which works somewhat like what you describe -- basically you define a method named
__resolve
in your class, and any time code calls a method or property which isn't explicity defined in the class, the call gets passed to the
__resolve
method. (Technically
__resolve
is a property of the
Object
class, so you are overriding that property when you define the method in your class).

Details:
__resolve documentation

Of course, you asked about AS3, so that's really all historical background information, nothing more. In AS3 the
__resolve
approach is no longer available. Instead, there is a new class, the
flash.utils.Proxy
class, which can be used to provide the same functionality. It is one of the peices of what they're calling the "Reflection API" in ActionScript 3. Admittedly I haven't used the Proxy class yet, so I can't give details on how it works, but the class has methods with names like "callProperty", "getProperty", "setProperty", etc., so it doesn't take too much imagination to at least see what some of the possibilities are.

Details:
Proxy class documentation

I hope this is helpful. Sometime soon I will be doing some work with reflection in ActionScript 3, and maybe when I've worked with it some I will write something up about it.

Great article!!! Gives a lot of insight into differences between AS2/AS3 and the powerfull possibilities of the runtime type checking without the compile time checking. This is also one of the powers of Ruby I'm currently looking at, they have a missing_method that is called in case a method does not exist. You can do really powerful things with this. Do you know if there is such a thing in AS3?
